Paul & Marit's Story

"We looked at a range of architects before choosing YellowDoor, and were impressed at the outset by their vision, creativity and sense of style for our house, which very much mirrored our own. Specifically, we really appreciated some clever ideas to maximise space in a terraced house, and thoughtful touches that have made a real difference to our home.

We were living abroad when this project took place so relied heavily on YellowDoor for project management from start to finish. As our house was a little 'fiddly' this meant a lot of design revisions, and then also supervising a tender process followed by a very close relationship with the contractors - all of which was handled incredibly well, and meant we were very reassured despite not being very present. We are delighted with the end result."

Reconfiguration and extension to an end-of-terrace Victorian house

We reconfigured the existing, poorly-planned ground floor to create a large open plan kitchen/dining room which is now the heart of the home.

Project brief

The existing ground floor layout did not work for Marit and Paul. The property had a disjointed layout with a small and dark kitchen/dining room. The entrance to the house did not offer anywhere to store shoes, coats and bags let alone a pram for their soon-to-be new arrival. The brief was to make the ground floor a much more inviting open plan space whilst still providing essential storage and utility areas.

We reconfigured the lounge to work with their existing furniture and to feel connected with the rest of the home. We designed a dedicated laundry, WC, pram storage and seating area to take off and put on shoes and coats without blocking up the hallway and bottom of the stairs, which was an important must-have for Paul and Marit. To the rear, we designed a rear-side extension to the existing outrigger to create their dream open plan kitchen and dining space, which provides plenty of space for playing, storage and relaxing. Both Paul and Marit now have their own bench seat they can use as a break out space for working on their laptops and, more importantly, for day-dreaming out of their windows.
